Angels Beside the Children

A Children’s Book By Joan Fennell Carringer
(Now available from www.Amazon.com)

ANGELS BESIDE THE CHILDREN is an A-Z series of short stories dealing with various problems faced by children.  Starting with Abbey and the Angel, about a little girl with a walking disability, they run through the entire alphabet, ending with Zonna and the Zero Angel, about a child who doesn’t like being different.  All the stories are delightful fantasies and include an angel that enters the life of the child to help that child overcome his or her fears.  In a simple, yet exciting way, each one touches on a very real childhood concern – as if emphasizes the comforting assurance of God’s love.

Whether you have children, grandchildren or you’re simply a child at heart, Angels Beside the Children is a book you’ll read over and over, tell others about, and keep forever!

The Story Behind Angels Beside the Children

The vision for this book came into focus after the amazing impact the very first story, Abbey and the Angel, had on the life of a little girl named Abbey Young.  Abbey is my niece.  Born with spina bifida, Abbey had serious problems that kept her from being able to walk alone, even at the age of three.  Without even thinking of her disability, I wanted to write a story for Abbey, just because I loved her.  I had no idea what it would even be about, only what it would be called.  So I sat down at my computer and keyed in the title I had in my mind, Abbey and the Angel – and God did the rest!   Through His divine inspiration, the words flowed from my heart to the paper.  When I gave the finished story to Abbey, she was so excited and encouraged by the fantasy tale about how an angel came to her and helped her learn to walk that she became very determined to try harder than she’d ever done before.  And she gave it all she had!  Today, Abbey can not only walk, she even runs.  And her mother gives the credit for her sudden new enthusiasm, increased efforts and ultimate success to this story.

I was so blessed by Abbey’s progress that I began to wonder if other stories could help other children, and I came up with the idea of a series, running from A-Z, which would deal with various problems small children face.  There would always be an angel, in some form or other, to assure the child of God’s love and help the child overcome a difficulty in his life.

So that’s what Angels Beside the Children is all about.  Perhaps your own child might be encouraged and helped by some particular story.  That is my prayer – and that is why this book is dedicated to ALL children, everywhere.

READ THE VERY FIRST STORY:  ABBEY AND THE ANGEL

“Abbey!  Wake up, Abbey!”

Abbey opened her eyes and sat up in her bed.  “Who is calling my name?”  she asked.

A very soft voice answered.  “I am an angel and I have come to talk to you.  God asked me to come and tell you that He loves you very much.”

Abbey’s little face turned sad.  “I don’t think God loves me at all.  He won’t let me walk like the other little kids.  I want to walk and run and play but my ankles are too weak.  I was born this way.”

“God still loves you, Abbey,”  the angel assured her.  “You are very special to Him.  He knows how much you want to walk and wants you to keep trying very, very hard.  He wants you to be real brave when your mommy and your nurses tell you to do exercises, even if they hurt a little bit, and He wants you to do everything they tell you to do.”

“Then will I walk?”  Abbey asked, becoming excited.

“Do you know what, Abbey?”  the angel responded.  “God loves you so much that He would still love you, even if you never walked.”

Abbey sighed.  “But does He want me to walk?”

“He wants you to walk very much,”  said the angel.

“Then why doesn’t He just let me walk, without the exercises?”  Abbey wanted to know.

The angel smiled.  “Look at all these little children that you see walking and running.  It was very easy for them to learn and walking is nothing really special to them.  They don’t even think about it.  They just do it.  But when you start walking, it will be so exciting and everyone will be so happy.”

“Because it’s so hard for me and it’s taken me so long to learn how!”  Abbey cried.  “That makes me really feel like practicing – so I can make everybody happy faster.”

“Do you want to try to walk right now?”  the angel wanted to know.

“But nobody will see me now,”  Abbey said quickly.

“God will see you,”  said the angel softly.

Abbey slowly swung her little legs around to the edge of the bed.  Then she stopped.  “I’m afraid.”

“Take my hand,”  the angel instructed her.

Abbey reached out her chubby little fingers and clasped the soft warm hand of the angel.  Very gently, she felt herself being pulled to her feet.  She stood very still, her small heart beating very fast.  Then she said, “I want to walk now.  I am ready!”

The angel glided backward through the air and her ruffly wings made a soft brushing sound as she did.  “Take a step, Abbey.”

Abbey took a step, then another, then another.

“Now, I will let go of your hand,”  the angel told her.

“No!”  Abbey cried, her eyes wide.  “Don’t let go.  I will fall.”

“If you tell yourself over and over that you will not fall,” said the angel, “you will be able to walk alone.”

“Did God tell you that?”  Abbey wanted to know.

The angel answered quickly.  “He said He wants you to really believe that you can step out all by yourself.  Can you believe that?”

Abbey swallowed and it was easy to see she was still afraid, but she said softly, “I believe I can step out by myself.”

“Say it again,”  the angel instructed her.

Abbey did.  “I believe I can step out – by myself.”  As she spoke she felt the angel’s hand pulling away.  “I believe I can step out – by myself.”  One little foot went forward and then the other.  She took one wobbly, uncertain step, then two and then three.  “I believe I can step out by myself.  I believe I can step out by myself.”  As her steps became steadier, Abbey became so excited she tried to walk faster, but then she began to fall.  “Help me!”  she cried.

The angel took her hand.  Then she picked Abbey up and snuggled her against her body.  “You did a wonderful job!  Oh, God is so proud of you right now.”

The angel smelled good, like all kinds of flowers and Abbey nuzzled her little nose against her.  Then she looked up into the angel’s face and the biggest, happiest smile came across her lips.  “Guh-Guh!”  she cried.  “You are Guh-Guh, my grandma that went to heaven!”

There were tears in the eyes of the angel, even though she was smiling.  “God let me come back to you, Abbey,”  she said, “to see you take your first steps.”

Abbey asked softly, “Do you miss me, Guh-Guh?”

The angel laughed.  “I’m not far enough away to miss you because I’ll always be in your heart and you will be in mine.  We are forever connected by love.  Now I need you to promise me you’ll keep trying to walk and keep believing it with all your heart. And when you do take those first steps alone for your mommy and daddy, Abbey, well, you might think you’re imagining you hear some extra laughter, but it will be me.  Will you remember that?”

“I will remember – and I will walk.  I promise!”
    And she did!
